What Is The Best Pet Insurance?

If you are wondering if pet health insurance is a good option, read on to see a comparison of the most popular options and which one gets the highest rating from consumer review sites as well as popular review sites like Yelp. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance gets superior ratings and reviews and is the best company I have found. Healthy Paws is the company I have used to insure my pets. Trupanion is another popular choice that pops up everywhere when you look for pet insurance. Just like health insurance for people, pet health insurance rates depend on age, gender, and the amount you want to choose for deductible and coverage.

There are some important differences between the plans however and you need to make sure you are comparing apples to apples as the saying goes! It may appear that one has a lower monthly rate until you realize you were actually comparing very different types of coverage. So, what is the best pet insurance? Below you will find the results of my comparison of these pet insurance brands and why one is far superior than all the others.

Basics to Consider for Pet Health Insurance

Just like insurance for people, the same basics such as age, and deductible amount apply. Understand these terms to understand what you are supposed to be getting from your policy. Be aware claims can be denied however, and read on for reviews of these companies to see which ones actually pay out.

Here are the basic terms in pet health insurance:

Species – Dog, cat etc. Healthy Paws and Trupanion only cover dogs and cats.

Age – The older a pet is the more the coverage will cost and the less desirable the terms may become (depending on plan) so it is always good to sign up your pet when they are younger. My cat gets to keep the lower rate even though she is 10 now since I signed her up when she was 6. For some plans like Healthy Paws there are age brackets. For some there is a sliding scale for each year of age.

Breed – It is common for different breeds to have different rates. For example a mixed breed cat is cheaper than some purebreds. This is not always the case though. A Norwegian Forest cat is cheaper than a French Chartreux I discovered when looking them up as well as my third cat who is an American Shorthair. Mixed Breed was cheapest followed by Norwegian Forest, American Shorthair and French Chartreux was the most expensive. There are many breeds and I did not look up the others so I don’t know how they compare.

Gender – I don’t know if this makes a large difference in price for spayed or neutered pets but they always ask your pet’s gender.

Veterinary Status – Some companies ask if your pet has been to the vet recently as well.

Rate – This is usually a monthly rate and is a set price such as $20 per month, $30 per month etc. This rate is very different depending which options you chose for deductible etc.

Deductible – This is the amount you pay before the insurance kicks in. This is just like health insurance for people. You usually have options and the lower deductible you choose, the higher the monthly rate will be. Deductibles may be $100,  $250, $500 or even $750 or $1,000 for older pets and cheaper monthly rates. This is highly variable however, so you need to check around. I will show you some example of how they compare between Healthy Paws and Trupanion below.

This is where I see a huge difference between Healthy Paws and Trupanion. Healthy Paws deductible is PER YEAR, whereas Trupanion’s deductible is PER CLAIM. So if your pet had two claims in a year, you would have to pay the deductible twice if you had a Trupanion policy! I almost didn’t notice this when comparing the two! I am glad I have Healthy Paws so the deductible is per year. However, Trupanion rates could be lower in some cases so it is up to you.

Coverage Limit – Healthy Paws and Trupanion are good options since they have no maximum limit. Other plans have limits of varying amounts such as $5,000.

There are other factors to consider. Many plans don’t cover pre-existing conditions for example. They also don’t usually cover routine vet check ups. They are intended to cover more major incidents like injury and illness. You also have to check and see if dental work is covered. Dental is very expensive in pets since anesthesia is required even for cleaning.

How do Healthy Paws and Trupanion compare side by side?

Healthy Paws rates are better if your pet is signed up when they are younger and you keep the coverage as they age. Therefore, the rates I will show here are for new sign ups at certain ages. What is advertised may not matter when you go to file a claim and it is denied however! Many, many reviews say Trupanion denies claims. It only gets 2.5 stars out of 398 reviews on Yelp. Please note: this post was written in 2018 and rates go up over time. The rate you get may be higher now.

What is the Best Pet Insurance? Healthy Paws or Trupanion?

For me, Healthy Paws is the best choice in pet insurance because their deductible is per year rather than per claim. Healthy Paws also gets terrific reviews by customers while Trupanion gets terrible reviews. They also give lifetime discounts which I can verify. I have had my oldest cat on a Healthy Paws plan for 5 years now. She is the French Chartreux in the examples above. Those are her actual premiums from Healthy Paws and a quote from Trupanion. My other boys have actual quotes in the examples above also. I can verify that I get a better rate since I signed my Chartreux up when she was younger and her coverage has not gone down. She still gets 80% coverage and a $250 deductible even though she is 10 years old. She also has a lower premium per month than if I signed her up now. What About Other Pet Insurance Companies Out There? How Do They Compare?

There are many other pet insurance companies but Healthy Paws has the highest ratings of all the companies I found. At the very bottom of the stack with the most terrible reviews is Nationwide Insurance. Their pet policies sound great on paper. They have 90% coverage and low deductibles. They claim to cover dental and exams as well! I was intrigued and checked them out thinking I might sign up my other cats. I am so glad I read reviews however and didn’t believe their advertising!

They Have Horrible Reviews on Average

Out of 481 reviews on Yelp for example, Nationwide has a 2 star average. There are some good reviews for accidents and injuries but there are many, many more horrible reviews. It is very common to see a review about the company denying claims for procedures that are supposed to be covered. One example is not paying for dental cleaning since the vet found tarter on the teeth! Therefore, the reviewer claims Nationwide denied their claim due to a pre-existing condition! Other reviewers say Nationwide demanded vet records from birth for their pet when a claim was submitted. I am sure most pet owners don’t have that. So, I would not trust the advertising and risk getting a policy from Nationwide. Trupanion has similar claims in its reviews though it gets a 2.5 star rating on average with 398 reviews. My co-worker has Trupanion and has had good luck with them.

How Does Healthy Paws Insurance Rate in Reviews?

Healthy Paws gets a 9.8 out of 10 stars on ConsumersAdvocate.org out of 1,300 reviews! You can read the Consumers Advocate guide to pet health insurance here, Consumers Advocate Pet Health Insurance Guide and Reviews.  That rating sounds great to me, however they give Nationwide an 8.5 so I don’t know how their rating system works.  Healthy Paws gets 4 stars on Yelp with 347 reviews. As you can see in the table above, Healthy Paws gets 4.9 stars out of 5 on Insuranceu.com.

Healthy Paws consistently gets the highest rating in all the pet health comparisons I have found. I have not used these insurance plans to file a claim yet but my experience with Healthy Paws for 5 years and hundreds of reviews of these companies make me confident Healthy Paws is the best health insurance for my pets.

Pets Live Longer and Have Better Quality of Life Now

Cats live much longer now than they did a few decades ago. This is due to improved care, better diet and better understanding of their health conditions. In fact, cats now live almost twice as long on average as they did in the 1980’s. Average life expectancy for a cat then was only 7 years. In the 1990’s it was 9 years and now it is 12 to 15 years.  For more information how to keep cats healthy as they age and how old cats live, please see my post here: How Old Do Cats Live. It is becoming common for some cats can live well into their 20’s.

The life expectancy of dogs has not changed greatly but that is partly due to a better understanding of cats compared to “man’s best friend” which got more attention in the United States in the past. Cats are catching up in the level of care they get and attention to their medical needs. Dogs and cats will enjoy a much better quality of life if their medical needs are monitored and owners can afford to address them.

I remember once taking one of my little guys to the hospital because he tore his ear open. Luckily it was only a few hundred dollars, but I remember there was a couple there with their dog who had been hit by a car and they couldn’t afford to treat him. It really tore me apart to have to see that. But it also made me think having something like this just for emergencies might be worth it. You never know when you’ll have that life or death moment and, unlike human hospitals, animal hospitals aren’t required to treat a dying animal, which is so sad to me.

I appreciate the breakdown on these particular insurance companies, I’m never sure who to go with. It does sound like the one you have is the best option. Do you know if there is a group deductible, or if the $250 would be per pet?

Thanks again for the great advice, Jessica.

      Hi Jaime,
That would absolutely break my heart to see someone not be able to afford vet care!

I have updated the review now and added specific ratings for the companies. It is amazing how bad the reviews are for many of them! They sound good on paper but then they don’t actually pay out for the claims! I am so glad I have Healthy Paws. As far as I know there are individual deductibles per pet.

Wow I’ve had my cat for couple of months now and did not know there is a thing like pet insurance. My question is, with my cat been both an outdoor and indoor pet, would pet insurance cover any damage or incident that happened to my cat while outside of my house?
If the insurance can cover then I will have peace of mind whenever my cats goes out.

Hello Peter. I have not seen any mention of indoor vs. outdoor on their website but I will look at my actual plan documents and see if I can find the answer for you. If they don’t mention it, then it should not matter and everything should be covered.

      Thanks for your question,

It depends on the age of your pet, what you can afford and what company you go through. Healthy Paws for example only has a few options each for deductible, premium and coverage. If you get a free quote you can see these options easily.

If you can afford to sign up when your pet is younger (under 6 is best) you can get lower rates and with Healthy Paws they will let you keep that lower rate even when they get older. Pet insurance is mostly to protect your pet in case of illness or injury. Regular exams aren’t usually covered and neither is dental.

I suggest you get a free quote (it just take a minute online) to see what the options are for your specific pet.

When I grew up, in the 70s and 80s, there was no such thing as pet insurance, at least not where I was from. Oregon and Washington.

So, this leads me to an honest question I have for you. Why is it so important to have pet insurance and why is this something that’s needed now and not in the past?

    Thanks.

    1. Jessica (Post author)

      Hello Rick,

I would say just like everything else prices have gone up dramatically for veterinary services and greatly outpace any increase in wages. The cost of getting dental cleaning done for my cats has gone up over 50% just since we did it last! What was a $700 bill would now be a $1200 bill. Most people don’t want to pay these kinds of prices for pet care. Of course dental is not even covered in most plans.

If your dog got hit by a car and you took them to the vet then it would be hundreds of dollars. Now it would be thousands. So if the price is at least 10 times higher, have our wages gone up 10 times? No. A good job now that pays $50,000 per year now did not pay only $5,000 per year back then. Nor did a $20,000 salary equate to only $2,000 back then.

People also take better care of their pets now. People regularly treat conditions that were not treated back then. People treat their pets as a true member of the family rather than just a pet as long as it is healthy and convenient. I am not saying there were not really good pet owners then. Part of the difference is the range of treatments available for pets now. There are many things I look back on now and wish we knew better how to handle them and take better care of our pets then.

Thanks for your question and stopping by,
      Jessica

Pet health insurance seems to be a lot like life insurance for people. The older you get the more expensive the coverage. This is something I have been looking into. Our cat is two years old and he is an indoor/outdoor cat. The vet has told us that the chances of him getting in fight are pretty high being outside, and that made me think that pet insurance might be a really good option for us. Since he is only 2, the rates seem to be pretty good and then we would be locked in at the lower rate.

Dental is another big piece to consider. When we had our dogs teeth cleaned, as an example, a few years ago it was pretty expensive. Thankfully they didn’t have to extract any teeth. So I will definitely have to make sure dental is covered. But, as you stated, these insurance plans are usually to cover the big stuff.

This post very thorough and I thank you for doing all of this research for me. Now I have a very good starting point. I am leaning toward Healthy Paws, since they have a very good rating.

      Hi Steve,

Since your cat is a 2 year old mixed breed, the rate for him would be even lower than those I show here. The quote I got on a 2 year old here was for a Ragdoll. I am so glad we signed up my girl when we did. I wish I had signed up my boy earlier too. Maybe we could have saved on his $600 echocardiogram this week! So far he has not needed any medical care other than that and dental other than the usual check ups. We have been fine so far without insurance for him but I still wish I had signed up sooner so we could benefit in all the years to come.

Some companies like Nationwide offer extra add-ons to the policy that looked great. When I saw how rarely they actually pay the claim without question though, I decided it wasn’t worth the risk. A great sounding policy where they don’t actually pay the claim is worthless.
As for dental…I am really glad I found the Gumz-n-Teeth supplement to save on that expense!

Thank you so much for the great information! We have a 10yr old Maltese mix who is started to show some medical problems so it may be time to look into this since they live so long. I remember having my mom’s dog in doggie ICU the last couple days of his life and the cost involved. Unfortunately we had to put him down but we still had the big bill to pay. Thank you for all this great research! We adopted our dog over 12 years ago. I had no idea about the need for insurance. I can not believe that a company has the nerve to charge a deductible for each claim! My question to you is, is there an insurance to purchase that covers preexisting conditions? Our dog has fatty tumors. If I was to go to the vet with insurance, how would that work? Thank you.

      Hello Colleen,
I don’t know of any pet insurance companies that cover pre-existing conditions. You could still get coverage for your dog however. It just wouldn’t cover that condition. My cat had a fatty tumor that was quite worriesome. The vets did biopsies on it three times to make sure that is what it was since they are very rare in cats (though common for dogs). Most tumors in cats are very serious. Somehow, it has shrunk on it’s own however! It used to get larger but now it is so small we couldn’t find it!

I suspect this is due to the Pet Alive Immunity and Liver Support supplement our cat’s get mixed into their food every day. This supplement is made for cats and dogs alike. You can read my review of it here: PetAlive Supplement For Immunity

Thank you for your comment and question.

Thanks for the comparison between Healthy Paws and Trupanion pet insurance. I have always thought about getting pet insurance for my dogs but it all just seemed to confusing. To me it seemed like you had to guess what your pet was more likely to need. Will he swallow something and need surgery or will he get cancer? I do like the idea of a once a year deductible as opposed to a per incident fee.

    1. Jessica (Post author)

Yes, it could make a huge difference if you ever had a serious health condition that required multiple trips to the vet in a year (and most serious conditions would!). Therefore, the coverage under those companies is very hard to quantify. Who knows how much you would end up paying? I like to know what I am getting and want to know how much it will cost. I am much more comfortable with an annual deductible. It seems you would likely spend way more if you have a per incident deductible.

Thank you for this article. So many people need to know this BEFORE they become a pet owner. Myself included!! We have had a very expensive lesson with our bulldog. His CCL had to be replaced and now hip dysplasia. He is only 4 yrs old and a complete mess!! I would rather have spent the $29/monthly than the $12k he cost in vet bills. WE deeply love him and want the best quality of life for him but had I actually took pet insurance seriously prior to his injuries(I spend more than $29/month on coffee!!) Much gratitude for educating this community. 🙂

Thank you very much Jaimee. Don’t feel too bad. Many people don’t have pet insurance! It is becoming more and more important though. As prices rise, the insurance will be worth more and more I believe. Our wages don’t keep up with inflation and cost of pet care have gone up drastically in recent years. People also have more extensive options available to care for their pets and those new options are not cheap.

Thanks! I hope you find a great policy for your fur babies!

I am truly amazed! I’ve heard a great deal about pet insurance but not so detailed. I have two adult cats we adopted as adults and four dogs. One dog is forever getting ear infections, I think both cats have either infections or ear mites.. It isn’t the visit that necessarily costs so much it’s the medication!! How do the plans work with the meds the vet may put your cat on? All of my animals are up on their shots and are either spayed or neutered, so no babies running around!! Thanks for doing the research, it helps a great deal. I’ll have to check into dog insurance also. My cats are the same way. Our first boy has had a series of names and we never call him by his original name. Our Norwegian Forest Cat is called “Pooch” which was due to his acting like a dog and before that it was “Mouse” since he was very timid at first. Ironic that a cat was called a mouse and a dog but it works for him!

This is the first time I hear about pet insurance. Is the pet insurance referring to covering medical expenses? Or does this include death compensation like human’s life insurance. I’ve read through your post two times but can’t find anything on this matter. I’ve a puppy as pet and he’s already 4 years old. So after reading your post, I thought it will be good to get one for him. Hope you can advise.

      Hello Florence,

Pet insurance is only for medical expenses. It is mainly for serious illness or injury rather than routine vet exams. No, pet insurance is not like life insurance in people.

If you get pet insurance with Healthy Paws when your pet is young you will save a lot of money and keep that rate as they get older. It pays to sign up your dog while he is 4 rather than wait until he is older.

Hi Jessica, when you have a pet, finances may not ever be the problem to go to the vet. So, when you have pets and not a big income, you’d be wise to get an insurance to keep the costs under control. You never know in which awkward position your pet is going to go. It’s a nice feeling that you always can go to the vet without getting broke. Thank you for the tips on where to look for, before I take out an insurance. I never thought that anesthesia is required even for cleaning.

      Hello Loes,

Yes, cleaning teeth is a huge deal for cats since anesthesia is required for any serious cleaning especially if they have plaque below the gumline. Many pet insurance policies don’t include dental so you always have to check. Most pet insurance is for serious illness and injury. I recommend this amazing supplement to keep cat and dog teeth clean. Pet Alive Gumz and Teeth

This is a terrific review. I have no idea whatsoever about pet insurance, but the way you presented your comparisons made it so easy to apprehend altogether.

And from my novice point of view, if I were to choose the very first pet insurance, it would be Healthy Paws of course. And your tables are really so dynamic as well. If you don’t mind, what tool did you use in creating your tables?

This is really one excellent review. I enjoyed the read.

      Hello,

I am glad you liked this review. I used a plugin called Table Press to create the tables. It is pretty easy to use.

      Thank you!

Very cool! I did not know that there was insurance like this for pets. Perhaps its not offered in my country yet, but it is still cool that it exists. Our dog was always getting herself into trouble and all the bills come out of your pocket. People always insure things that are valuable so what could be more valuable than your best bud?

I think even the names are catchy, Trupanion and Healthy paws. When your animals are sick, it is stressful enough without having to think about all the bills you are racking up. I would definitely invest in pet insurance if I could.

      Hello Renton,

I hope you can find pet insurance in your country. I just saw someone else’s comment here and he said he checked and it was available in his country. I hope that happens soon for you too.

      Thank you for stopping by,

      Jessica

I think I have read an article like this before ( it may even have been this one!). I think that it must be pretty good if I cam across it twice! I still think it’s a great idea to have pet insurance (even if they only cover dogs and cats for now). To be able to have some peace of mind for one of your best friends is great.

I would definitely consider this if they ever introduce it in my country.

Hi Jessica, Pet Insurance is so important as the cost of Vets bills can cripple you. You have done your homework and found Healthy Paws to be the best and it has worked for you.

In this Country, the only Pet Insurance I have seen advertised is Pet Sure. Think that there must be others around that I don’t know about.

My feeling is that everyone who has a furry friend, should take out Insurance as it can be so costly when something goes wrong. A friend of mine had a young  dog who damaged its back. It was operated on, at great cost, kept quiet for two weeks in a cage but sadly had to be “put to sleep”. They did not have Pet Insurance.

Now that they have a new furry friend, they have wisely taken out Insurance.

Thank you for all the work you did to help people understand the necessity of choosing the Pet Insurance that would suit them and their pocket.

      Hello Jill,

I am sorry to hear about your friend’s dog. That is so sad. I agree that pet insurance is so important. I hope you have some good options in your country. It can be hard to find pet insurance that is a good deal.

      Thank you for stopping by!

Great post and it is very recommendable for us.

We have 2 cats and 1 dog, and they are monsters, really.

They want to break off everything and if we would allow them also they would go to the neighbours.

An insurance has to be really good for us, and I saw Healthy Paws is very nice, has a lot of positive comments and it covers what we need.

Thanks for sharing it with us!

      Hello Emmanuel,

Pet insurance is always a good idea if you can get it. I would recommend it if your pets are active and may be getting into mischief outside!

      Thanks for stopping by!

We so love our pets.  But vet bills can be high. I do not know much about pet insurance but if you need to visit the vet with your beloved pet it can be costly.  So getting insurance would definitely give one piece of mind and not drain the bank account. Great comparison on companies.
