How Does Litter Genie Work?

Litter Genie contains odor completely and also saves time and inconvenience. Scooping the cat box is always a hassle. It has to be done every day and even multiple times per day if you don’t want cat box smell in your house. After you scoop the box you still have to deal with the contents! If you put it in the trash it can just stink up your house from there. You can put it in separate bags before you put it in the trash but then those bags have to be airtight in order to control smell. Even if you have a garbage can with a tight lid, every time you open the lid the smell comes out. The alternative is to take out the trash every time you scoop the box or rely on strong smelling air fresheners that are annoying and unhealthy. There is a better solution to all this! The Litter Genie keeps the contents of the litter box sealed off for up to two weeks of scooping before you have to take it to the trash. So, how does the Litter Genie Work?

The Litter Genie is a wonderful idea! It is a simple, affordable container which holds a large enough bag to last days or weeks depending on how may cats you have. You drop the contents from the cat scoop into the top portion of the Litter Genie. When you are done, you pull out the divider that allows the contents to fall into the bottom portion of the bag. When you put it back in place it forms a virtually airtight seal that keeps the smell in the lower portion of the bag. You don’t even see it until you replace the bag. The Litter Genie works! I could not smell anything when I used it! Now instead of the original Litter Genie you can get the Litter Genie Plus which has an antimicrobial built into the container.

My Honest Opinion, Does the Litter Genie Work?

Yes, Litter Genie works! I was surprised at how effective it is. It really does control the smell. It is also saves a lot of time. You don’t have to find a bag and make sure it is sealed or take your trash out everytime you scoop. It is also easier to get the waste into the Litter Genie than into a little bag. The top of the bag is fitted over the chute where you drop the waste.

Could the Litter Genie Be Better?

Yes. It is so lightweight, it moves around as you are using it. I wish it was made of a heavier material instead of plastic. I didn’t know to close the lid before opening the “hatch” so to speak to let the waste fall down. I wished I could do this with one hand since I still had the scoop in the other. Now I know to set the scoop in the attached tray, then use two hands to open the door/hatch. It does not feel like it will fall apart, it just isn’t a super high quality container. Overall it feels a little a little cheap but for the price it is still far superior to going without and just scooping into bags and dealing with stinky trash.

Would I Recommend Litter Genie?

Yes. If you have clay cat litter and need to scoop your cat box and deal with the waste, this is definitely the way to go. I would be interested to see if they come out with a heavier model but in the meantime the price of this device is great! I would recommend Litter Genie to anyone who uses clay cat litter.

What Alternatives are There to Litter Genie?

There is a similar product called Litter Champ. It is larger and holds more which is good for multi-cat households but many people say the Litter Genie is better at odor control. Also, the Litter Champ has a foot petal to open the top lid but you have to manually push the inner trap door down which can get messy. Also, the Litter Champ has no warning that you are getting low on liner bags. I personally recommend using a natural, flush-able cat litter such as Okocat brand pine litter so you don’t need a litter disposal system. With flushable litters  you just flush the solids down the toilet and don’t ever have to deal with cat waste in the trash on a daily basis. Once a week or two you empty the whole thing out and take it to the trash, but daily scooping goes in the toilet. Here is my review of Okocat litter. If you use clay litter however, I do recommend trying one of these litter disposal systems.

What Does Litter Genie Come With?

Litter Genie comes with the canister, scoop, scoop holder and one cartridge. The cartridge contains the plastic bag material. When the bag is full, you use the built in cutter to cut it off and roll out the next length. Tie a knot in the end and you are ready to go. You can purchase the refill cartridges separately. They are affordable and contain 14 feet of bag material which should last up to 2 months.

Reviews of Litter Genie

Amazon has over 3,000 5 star reviews for Litter Genie. That is 70% of all reviews written for this product. The average review is 4.3 out of 5 stars. Chewy.com has over 1200 reviews for Litter Genie and they have a high average as well. Most reviewers absolutely love the Litter Genie and would recommend it. The downsides mostly focus on the low quality of the material and reviewers wish it was a bit more sturdy. There are some complaints about the latching mechanisms as well and some wish the overall size was larger. I think the size is fine and makes it handy to fit in just about any space such as under a counter or bathroom sink. I also think for the price, the quality is acceptable.

I’m going to recommend this to my neighbour, who has a cat. I myself used to bring strays home, but because of their wild nature, they prefer to do their business outside. Anyway they don’t stay long, often a few weeks, or up to months if I’m lucky, and off they would go on a new adventure. If I ever get a permanent house cat, I know the Litter Genie would certainly be something at the top of my shopping list.
And I wasn’t aware of flush-able litter until I read your post! How amazing is that?

      Hello Joo,
Yes, if I ever use clay litter again I will have a Litter Genie! I thought it was great when I used it while cat sitting recently. If you get a cat and need litter please check out my post here on my favorite cat litters both clay and flushable pine. https://thrivingcat.com/what-is-the-best-clay-cat-litter

Hi Jessica, thanks for your post about the Litter Genie. I’ve never had a cat before and have agreed to mind one for a while but have been worried about the whole litter situation and our house smelling. I think for $19.95 I’m just going to get one so that I don’t have to think about it anymore. We are used to having dogs and have doggie doors – cats are a whole new thing for us! I’m looking forward to house sitting her and now I can stop worrying 🙂 Thank you

      Hi Melissa,

Yes, for the price I think it is totally worth it! The silver color vs. the black was even cheaper when I looked last. I think it was on sale but I am not sure now. I prefer the flushable litter and then storing the waste or taking it to the garbage every day is not an issue. If I have to use clay though (as I did when pet sitting last week) I will use this!

I hope pet sitting goes well for you. It can take some time for cats to feel comfortable in a new home but it is so worth it when they do!

This is really useful! And it is so amazing they have such products out there today. It truly helps to make the home more pleasant.

I truly appreciate your detailed info about the Litter Genie. All that for such an affordable price! My concern is the same as yours, that the product is made of plastic. Is it light plastic? Is it easily breakable? That is, when I get it, will there be a chance that it may be cracked? Also, while using, will it break easily? Look forward to your kind reply. 🙂

      Hello Tim,

No, it is not light plastic that would be in danger of breaking. I don’t think you have to worry about that. I just wish it was heavier so when you are using it, it would stay in place and not slide on the floor.

I still recommend it and think it is a brilliant idea!

      Thanks,
      Jessica

My friends would appreciate this information. I will share it with them. They always complain about the litter box smell. I am glad I came to your website. Looks like I found a solution to their problem. I personally don’t have cats. I always want to have one. I might get one in the future. Now that I am much more educated about little box and the solution to this problem, I will be prepared for the future. This is a great review, very useful and informative. I learned a lot from your post. Thank you very much for sharing.

I love the Litter Genie. It makes me feel like a mom with a diaper pail. And it makes it easy and fast to scoop the cat box every day, but I don’t have to run downstairs and out to the trash all the time. The only problem we had with it is that we outgrew it when we got more cats. I hadn’t heard of the Litter Champ though. I might check that out as a larger option. I love your posts, as always. Thanks, Jessica.

      Hello Jaime,

I used the Litter Genie when cat sitting for two cats. It worked fine for them but it would not work so well for our 4 cats! I am so glad I use the pine litter that is flushable and lightweight so I don’t have this problem. If I used clay litter again I would get one of these devices though. We just recently used clay litter for a few weeks after we got our 4th cat. She was used to clay so that is what we used for her at first. All the other cats thought it was something new and interesting so they all used that box as well! With 4 cats using the clay litter it just about drove us crazy! What a hassle! I understand why some people don’t want to have cats if they don’t know about options like flushable litter or the Litter Genie or Litter Champ.

I have used the Litter Genie before, and I loved it. We have two many cats now – but it’s perfect for two cats, and we used the idea to create our own larger version. I loved mostly the lack of smell, and that I could scoop every day, but not have to go through the whole process of taking the bag outside and downstairs to the dumpster. With Litter Genie I could take it down once every few days when I took the kitchen trash. It’s very useful if you live in a small apartment, and the lack of smell makes it so, so worth it. I’m glad you reviewed this, Jessica.

      Hi Jaime,
I think products like this along with a good litter (odor control and lightweight) good cat box (large enough and high enough) and mats (to contain stray litter) can make having a cat/cats so much more enjoyable! If you can control the smell and make scooping the box easier it is so much better! That is neat you made a larger version yourself!

      Thanks!

Hey Jessica! Nice review and great info. I definitely need this in my house. I noticed you specified that this one is for clay litter but what about for natural litters that are wood chips and other materials like that. Would this work or what would you recommend?
    Thanks,

      Hello Marlinda,

You certainly could use the Litter Genie for pine litter but there is no need since you can flush the waste down the toilet when you use pine litter. That is the beauty of it! Therefore there would not be any need for a Litter Genie with those litters. With any other litters that are not flushable, the Genie would be great though!

Hi I came across your article and had to let you know that I have a litter genie for my little Lily.  I really like it, I agree it’s a little light, but it sure works well to contain those smells until it’s time to go to the garbage dump.  I’m glad I got mine and the price was reasonable as well.

This looks like a great idea who’s time is due! Not only would this be a tremendous product for me with one cat. But I can also gift these out to family and neighbors a like! I have a neighbor who is a cat hoarder almost. She has six cats and when visiting it smells like thirty cats, if you know what I mean. Due to the decent pricing I will be picking up a few. Can’t wait to finally know that when people visit me, that any rude or unpleasant smells that I may have become accustomed to over time, is neutralized!

Very interesting. This is a very great concept as I do not like scooping and cleaning all the time. If I can put the mess away for a while and still not have to suffer the smell, the better.I would prefer the Litter Genie Plus. Seems like an upgrade for even better service. Glad to know that they come with scoop holder. This is one of the tools I always wish I had.Thank you for suggesting this option. Great article!

Litter Genie is what my best friend needs right now. His cat stays in his room and he always complain how hard and time consuming it is to always clean up his cat litter. He would just dump it in his trash can and it would still smell even if it’s inside a plastic container. I think this product is amazing when it comes to health, cleanliness and house hold management. This product is a necessity to give you convenience in disposing cat litter. I would definitely share your post to my cat lover friends.

Hi Jessica – This is a great practical product and your review is the icing on the cake!  One of the things that have discouraged me from owing a cat was the odor.  Well this is certainly an answer to that concern.  Until I read this post, I didn’t know that there were so many different variations of liter.  Flushable even!  Perhaps I can rescue a cat after all!

    Thanks for the opportunity!
