Cat Furniture For Apartments

Make a good home for your indoor cat in a small space with these pieces of cat furniture for apartments. Cat trees, climbing stairs and window seats can all help cats have fun, get exercise and move like wild cats while inside. Cats can live happily indoors where they are safe as long as they have adequate space to climb and play. Here are some great pieces of furniture to conserve space and give your cats the room they need with vertical elements to save valuable square footage and help cats meet their natural desires to be up high.

What Kind of Cat Furniture Fits in Apartments?

In an apartment or any home where you want to conserve space, you want to take advantage of walls, vertical surfaces and height. These featured pieces of cat furniture take advantage of vertical space to reduce the floor space used and also take advantage of cat’s natural desire to climb and be up high where they feel safe and happy.

Wall Mounted Cat Tree, Save Space!

Do you want to save space in your apartment or home? Does a cat tree just seem too large and take up too much of your precious square footage? Here is the ultimate, space efficient cat play place that is wall mounted and uses NO FLOOR SPACE! How neat is this! I will be ordering one of these! It gets great reviews and I am sure my cats would love this. It is hand made and includes three levels. Cats climb up the ramp and through the hole in the landing, then they can go across the bridge (or probably lounge on it like a hammock). They can also jump up to a higher hammock. Why didn’t I think of this?! No matter how small your apartment or home, you will have room for this cat tree. There are smaller and larger options available in the same line.

Cat Window Sill Perch

These are such a great idea. They are simple, don’t take up ANY floor space and cats love them.  Cats all love to look out windows so let your cat do that and give him entertainment all day long! This looks more attractive than window mounted perches so if you can install this in your wall, I would chose this type of perch. If you can’t put any holes in your walls, you can use a window mounted perch reviewed below. This particular perch gets over  2,000 reviews on Amazon with a 4 and a half out of 5 star average. If you don’t have room for a cat tree or more extensive cat furniture, I would definitely get one of these for an indoor cat.

Practical Cat Trees

This is the classic. Every cat I have had loves cat trees. These do take up some floor space but you can get maximum utilization by getting this tall, affordable, sturdy tree with 10 scratching posts, build in toys, 3 platforms and 2 boxes. This is the cat tree I have for my kitty family. It is an amazing value and so much more affordable than cat trees in local stores like PetCo or PetSmart which are several hundred dollars and much smaller. Click the link below or read my personal review of this cat tree here. Go Pet Club Cat Tree review. It is the best value I have found and I highly recommend it. It is still going strong with 4 cats and over a year and a half of daily use. They use the scratching posts every single time they want to scratch. I love that it has so many scratching posts so you don’t have to worry about just one that will get worn out! They also climb to the top and perch, looking out the window or keeping an eye out from their tall perch. They go up it to get brushed since they like being on our level and also chase each other and roughhouse on it. It is great exercise for an indoor cat. This specific model is not tippy at all. Many people wonder about such a tall cat tree being prone to tip over but it has a wide and solid enough base, this has never tipped at all. I have not used any other Go Pet Club cat trees so I cannot vouch for their characteristics but they seem to have high ratings.

Cat Back of Door Stairs

This is a different take on the wall stairs, but doesn’t require any holes in the wall, screws or hardware! All you need is the back of a door. Therefore, this is an option that anyone can set up in an instant. No tools, no expertise and you don’t need to find the wall studs or worry about any damage. There are mixed review of this product however as some people with large cats say the stairs are not staggered enough so their cats have a hard time getting back down. This can be solved by drilling new holes in the stairs and staggering them by separating them so each end extends further out. That way there is a larger platform for the cat to jump down on from the one above. Cat Door Stairs on Amazon.

Cat Window Perches

This is another classic that most all cats enjoy. I have never met a cat that didn’t like looking out the window. I suppose there is one out there somewhere but I have not met him! There are many knock off window perches but here is the standard. It is still hand made, has extra large suction cups that hold more weight and seems to be widely cat and owner approved. They come in three sizes. Small is 14 inches by 19.5 inches wide. Medium is 14 inches by 22 inches wide. Large is 14 inches by 25.5 inches wide. If you can’t put any holes in your wall, this is the perfect option to install a perch for your cat. This is also a quick and easy piece of cat furniture to install that does not take any special tools or construction. Just make sure to follow the directions so the window is very clean before installing the suction cups.

The Kitty Cot is an Amazon’s Choice pick with high rating and over 1,200 reviews. The only time I saw someone report a problem was when they did not install it properly. Someone tried to install it at an angle rather than making it level. That reviewer commented that it was no fault of the product, but user error. Multiple cats often use this together and the suction cups are they say it will hold up to 25 pounds, though each of the 4 suction cups will hold up to 12 pounds so the 25 pound estimate is a conservative one and it should hold more. There are many warnings by users to get this model, not cheap knock off products. The cheaper versions are not as strong and may come down.

Upscale Modern Cat Furniture

For the cat owner with a taste for something modern and sleek in a fancy apartment there are unique pieces of cat furniture that can fit the bill. Do you want something that is a conversation piece? Perhaps you want something in a specific color to match your taste. A cat will be happy climbing regardless of the look or color, so feel free to have the piece fit your taste. Your cat will really not care as long as he or she can climb, get up high and be kind or queen of the jungle.

If you want upscale modern cat furniture, the Refined Feline Lotus Cat Tower may be just the piece you are looking for. This piece of cat furniture is more like modern art. It is also space efficient and comes in several colors to match your decor.

Whatever your space restrictions you can find great cat furniture to take advantage of vertical space. I hope you try one of these pieces and let me know what your cats think!

    Hi Jessica,

I totally agree having a cat indoors it is important to keep them stimulated and occupied. I never realised there were so many options available and even good options for a small amount of space. Sometimes it is hard to know what to look and what will work best in the space. Cat back of door steps sound like they would be best in a rental because I don’t have to put holes in the wall and I always appreciate something easy to set up. Thanks for your advice on cat furniture that will work in apartments.

Just what I was looking for! Me and my cat Jax are moving to our very own apartment next month. Of course Jax needs his own furniture as much as I do, so I was searching everywhere to find some inspiration.

The wall mounted cat tree and a window sill perch are now on the list! Thanks!

Great Post! That cat in the first picture has absolutely gorgeous eyes! It looks like tropical waters. I think that this list is brilliant because of the variety of product showcased. The only product I really think of is a cat scratching post but I now see that there is an entire world of cat furniture out there.

I have seen quite a few of these in videos on YouTube like the wall mounted cat trees for example. They always look like such fun for the cats.

This is interesting and cat lovers will be loving it.  I like each piece of furniture you have described because I was never a fan for keeping cats inside because of their agility.

Now I look at it in a different light, I specifically like the Cat Window Sill Perch and the Cat Back of Door Stairs because it requires no installation.  This is important to someone living in a rented apartment.  Your carefully selected items are a stroke of genius.

Thanks for the introduction of these furniture personally I was not aware there were so much things to keep the cat active.

I had a rather large cat tree about 5 ft at one time the cats loved. However I have since down graded to a studio apt. I have been having a difficult time trying to find something that would fit.

The over the door stairs looks like it might do the trick, but I am still concerned. Just how sturdy they would be with everyday use. Do you think they would hold up under regular play and climbing?

    Reply
    1. Jessica (Post author)

      Hello Cathy,

I have not used those myself so I hesitate to say how sturdy they are. They get high reviews on Amazon however. I would read the reviews and see if you feel they sound like the right thing for your situation. I think the wall mounted “tree” would be a better solution since the over the door stairs have more limited uses.

Thank you for stopping by. I hope one of these works for your cats.

Great, finally I found some new ideas for making my cat’s home more adventurous.

I have the problem not having too much space and not being allowed to drill wholes into the walls. The cat trees are no option as they take too much space.

I never heard of the back of door stairs. This I’ll have to look into. I have a door that keeps open all the time I think that’s the right choice for me, thanks 🙂

Having a pet is a great responsibility, i never thought about having the right time of furniture for a pet like a cat before reading your article. I love cats and as you so rightfully said in your article, they need to stay stimulated and there are so many ways to do that as a cat owner. One  of my favorite that you mentioned was the cat window perches, every cat i have ever  known loves looking out the window. Thanks for sharing this article really appreciate it

      Hello Jamiro,

It is pretty easy to provide these pieces of furniture for our cats and they will use them every day! That is a great value for you and your pet. I don’t have a window perch because I have the tall cat tree set up right by the window and my cats sit on the perches there and look out the window. If I didn’t have the big cat tree set up there I would have window perches for them.

it is very important for our cats to be kept active while indoors. Making sure your cat has its own furniture tends to limit its use of other home appliances and furnitures for play and stimulation.Your article has done a great deal of good in highlighting the various options of cat furniture available and explaining briefly for proper selection.

Yes. The best example of what you are talking about is when cats don’t have a good scratching post and use the furniture instead! It is much easier for cats to behave well when they have the proper toys and furniture for their needs.

Thanks for a great post.  I have two cats and have just moved from a large house with a yard to a much small condo on the third floor.  Since we have moved in my cats heave steadily become grumpier and have behaviour problems they didn’t have before.  They are scratching on everything and make a mess everyday that I am gone for work.  I believe they are getting bored so I am looking for solutions and found your site. Thank you for all of these great suggestions.  I am looking at a couple of your recommendations including the Cat window perches, the classic cat tree and the wall mounted cat tree.  I have a whole room that is empty so space is not an issue but i need to find something to keep them entertained before they destroy the place!  Thanks so much for the ideas.

      Hello,

I agree. Your cats are probably not happy with the new smaller space and anything you can do to give them room to climb and run around will be a benefit. Cat’s love to run in short bursts but they are so fast they can cover a great distance in just a few seconds. I felt bad moving into an apartment with my cats since they didn’t have much ground to cover at a sprint! I knew I had to get them as much vertical space as possible so I got the awesome cat tree. All of my cats use it and it is the best value of any cat toy/item I have purchased. They use the 10 scratching posts every day which is great!  They also run up it, sit on it and look out the window, sleep on it and play on it.

I hope whatever you get makes your cats happy!

As a cat owner and cat lover, I definitely think this is a great collection of things to keep kitty happy. The wall mounted cat tree is such a great idea for a space that is small and doesn’t offer enough floor space for big cat furniture. Cats also love to be able to look outside, catch some rays of sun, and meow at birds, so it’s great to see so many window based options available. Thanks for pulling together so many fun options for cats living in a small apartment!
